AFCON 2015: Super Eagles would have performed better if qualified

The embattled Super Eagles Coach, Stephen Keshi, has revealed that the Nigerian team would have performed well at the on-going African Cup of Nations, if they had qualified for the continental showpiece.

Keshi, who won the best coach in the continent of Africa for the year 2013 could not qualify the nation's national team for the 2015 edition of the AFCON tournament after losing their first game 1-3 to Congo and then drawing their last, which was a must win against South Africa.

The 52 year old gaffer helped Nigeria win her third AFCON title in South Africa and qualified for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.

However, the Nigeria Football Federation have not been clear as to what to do with the 53-year-old’s contract. The Keshi/NFF contract impasse could have been the biggest obstacle to the champions’ failure to qualify for the 30th edition of the AFCON.

The Big Boss said the best teams don’t always win in tournaments but will the right attitude and work ethic any team will stand a chance.
He explained that retaining the title if Nigeria had managed to qualify will depend on preparation and subsequently the players’ state of mind and what their motivation is.

"It depends on how Nigeria prepares before the tournament and the ambitions of the players. Questions must be asked and answers provided, such as, do they want to defend and win? There are a lot of things that go with playing and winning. We could have made an impact if we were there though." footballlive
