A former women’s 400m champion, Falilat Ogunkoya, has commended Special Adviser to former President Goodluck Jonathan, Kingsley Kuku, form sponsoring an athletics event in Akure.
She added that that if corporate organisations will take a cue from Kuku's gesture by funding championships and games aimed at discovering and nurturing talents, Nigeria will produce talents that can compete at the world level.
Ogunkoya also said that such sponsorship could create employment for teeming youths all over the country and reduce employment rate in the country.
“Kuku did not only sponsor the meet, he added glamour by mobilising hundreds of Akure residents to attend the championships. Apart from the prize money AFN paid the athletes, Kuku also gave best performers special money. If we have 37 Kukus in the 36 states and the FCT, hundreds of Usain Bolts and other great talents in Nigeria would be discovered in a short time,” Ogunkoya said.
Yussuf Alli, the technical manager of the Golden League, also reiterated Ogunkoya's assertions that if Nigerians would emulate Kuku by investing in sports, especially track and field, they would not only assist in discovering new talents but also solving many socio-economic problems.
“Studies have shown that there are three ways societies can help children: they are sports, education and entertainment. Sports is the least expensive and most adaptable among the three,” Alli said. Punch
