National Under-23 coach, Samson Siasia, has revealed that Flying Eagles striker, Taiwo Awoniyi was benched in Sunday’s CAF Under-23 Championship qualifier against Congo because the Flying Eagles star was not fit.
The 18-year old forward was instrumental to the Dream Team VI victory over Zambia after he scoring twice in a 2015 All Africa Games qualifier in Lusaka in April.
The former Flying Eagles coach decided to field Junior Ajayi, who gave him the all important points ahead of the 2013 FIFA U-17 world cup champions.
The coach said Awoniyi suffered a training ground injury on the eve of the match and there was also a better understanding between Junior Ajayi and support striker Etebo Oghenekaro.
“Awoniyi was a little bit injured before the game and also there is a better chemistry between Junior and Oghenekaro as they have been together for some time now,” Siasia was quoted by AfricanFootball.com as saying on Thursday.
Nigeria will be away to Congo in Pointe Noire on August 2 to determine the team that will qualify for the CAF U23 Championship in Senegal, which will serve as qualifying tournament for the 2016 Rio Olympics.
