Daniel Akpeyi In Our Plans- Alloy Agu Insists

Super Eagles' goalkeeper's trainer, Alloy Agu has insisted that former Warri Wolves goalkeeper, Daniel Akpeyi remains one of the best who could take over from Vincent Enyeama when he retires.

The former Nigerian international while reacting to Akpeyi's exclusion explained that the coaching crew understood he just signed a new contract thereby allowing him to settle in his new club.

Akpeyi joined South African topflight side, Chippa FC from nigeria's Warri Wolves following his impressive performances at the club level as well against the Bafana Bafana side in a friendly game earlier this year.

"Daniel Akpeyi is one of the goalkeepers I have monitored in the league while he was with Warri Wolves, and even his performances in the friendly match (against South Africa) recently showed that he is one of our best and I believe that is why the club in South Africa signed him up.

"Like most of the players who were not invited for this game, Akpeyi is very much in our plans as we believe he can also provide competition in the goalkeeping department of the team. For now, we thought it best for him to settle down at his new team and then we can monitor his progress as well," Agu told supersport.com.

The former Eagles shotstopper also explained that the two goalkeeper selected to join Enyeama have been impressive for their clubs in recent times.

"Carl is a decent goalkeeper. He is among the most respected goalkeepers in England and he will certainly be a good addition to the team. As for Ikechukwu, he has spent a week with us and I can say he is one of the best in the league right now and certainly his future remains bright provided he keeps working hard to stay in good shape," said Agu.

Nigeria go up against Tanzania's Taifa Stars in a 2017 Afcon qualifier in Dar es Salaam on September 5 and three days later play hosts to Niger Republic and the trio of Enyeama, Ezenwa and Ikeme are the goalkeepers called up by head coach Sunday Oliseh for both matches.
