Ejike Ugboaja Vows To Stop University Drop-outs From Playing Basketball In Nigerian League

The president of the Basketball Players Association of Nigeria, Ejike Ugboaja has revealed that starting from next season, all the basketball players in the league must be insured.

Ugboaja, who witnessed the playoffs final between Mark Mentors and Kano Pillars also disclosed that the association will starting chasing non-university graduates from featuring in the national leagues in Nigeria.

He added that the Nigerian basketball has been on a decline, blaming it on the infighting among those managing the game, saying that all hands must be on deck to see the league and it's players move forward.

He said, “Starting from next season, we want all the players the national professional basketball leagues to be insured and most of the players should be going to school. If you are not a graduate, or you are not going to school, we don’t want you in the league.

“We are doing this so that in case of injuries the player will not become a nuisance in the street. Players must have insurance to play in the league because of injuries and players’ welfare should be improved.”

Ugboaja explained that this scheme is to help the basketball league players in the case of any unforeseen circumstances which may force them out early in their career. Punch
