Ex-Nigerian international, Tajudeen Disu, has blasted the present Super Eagles squad for making money their motivating factor for winning games for Nigeria.
Nigeria beat Swaziland 2-0 to reach the final group stage for 2018 FIFA world cup to be staged in Russia after being promised $20,000 reward per goal adding that the honour of playing at a World Cup should be enough motivation for the players.
The Rivers State Government gave the team $40, 000 forthe Eagles’ two goals in the game at the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium, Port Harcourt. The match ended 2-0 in favour of Nigeria.
“The cash incentives being given players before matches are unnecessary because it can cause distractions in the team,” Disu told our correspondent.
“In our time there was no need for such incentives because we were playing for the love of the game. We cherished the national jersey and the pride of serving our country. Playing at a World Cup is enough motivation for any player.
“Everything has change now, and everybody – from the administrators to the coaches and the players – everybody is hungry for money. There is so much money in the game now that everybody’s interest is in the money.
“That money could have caused the team that match (against Swaziland) if it wasn’t handled properly. Players could have become selfish as each person may have wanted to score goals and earn himself some money rather than work for the team. They should have been kept quiet until after the match to reward the team.
“But many things are wrong with our football these days. Everybody has become corrupt and it is a shame. If we can get it right from the administrators to the coaches and the players, our football will be good again. The bane of Nigeria football is corruption and politics.” Punch
