Barcelona Beat Real Betis 4-0; Smashed Real Madrid's Goal Record

Barcelona finished 2015 at the summit of the Spanish league after thrashing Real Betis 4-0 on their return from the club world cup championship.

The Catalans also dethroned their arch rivals, Real Madrid's by setting a 180 goal record for the most goals scored in a calendar year, on Wednesday evening.

Lionel Messi's strike had pulled Barca level on 178 goals in all competitions with Madrid, who set the record in 2014, while two Luis Suarez efforts pushed the Spanish champions' total to 180 for 2015.

Messi, who reached his 500th appearance for Barcelona has now scored a total of 425 goals, created 159 assists, bagged 32 hat-tricks and won 26 titles, the latest being the club world cup in December, all in the space of 12 seasons.

The 27-year old completed his 2015 with a goal in his 500th appearance to bring his tally in the outgoing year to 48, while Suarez has 48 goals and Neymar has 41. Together, the trio have scored 75% of Barcelona's total goals for the year.
