Former Nigerian international, Dosu Joseph, has commended the Lagos state government for honouring the Atlanta ’96 squad for their heroic performance 20 years after winning gold medal at the Atlanta Olympic Games in US.
Nigeria beat Argentina in the final of the event to clinch her first gold medal of the men’s football
category of the event.
Dosu Joseph: "I think the Lagos State football association has done well bringing every one of us together after twenty years, I'm seeing Amunike for the first time after so many years, I think that has really brought back the memory, bringing every one of us down here won't be easy because we live in different part of the state, but it would have been lovely if a lot them were here, all said and done, I think the state has done a very good work by remembering us and bringing us together, that alone goes a long way and I say congratulations."
"I saw the young ones, they are young shall grow and I believe one day they will play for the national team, some of them will surely play in Europe. It is something to remember, today they are here seeing some of us, I'm sure some will know us and some won't, some would have heard about us and others seen the clips on the television because I'm sure a lot them who are here today weren't born then, but then, history is for them to learn from and I wish them all the best in their education and their career."
"May be yes or know but the memory he brought was that of the yesteryears, he's a young chap, and in goal he made some saves, and I think he has a future in the game that was why I had to encourage him, even when those two goals were scored against the substituted keeper, I looked at it and I felt the first goalkeeper could have saved those two goals but then goalkeepers do concede goal, but I only pat him and wished him the very best in his career."
"I've done so well when it comes to academy, I have an academy that I've been running for ages and the academy has produced players to the national team, Europe and the Nigerian league. I think I've done well when it comes to academy, I've done well for Nigeria by producing players, and I've also done well for those players by putting food on their table for their families."
"Dele Adeleye was a member of our academy, Lukman Haruna, Olufemi Oladapo, Peter Rafael that won the 2007 U17 world cup, we have a lot of them that have done so well and put on green white green for Nigeria."
