NPFL News: Dolphins FC Re-Named Rivers United By State Government

The Rivers State government have changed the identity of their representative in the Nigeria Professional Football League from Dolphins FC to Rivers United Football Club.

The name change was confirmed by the League Management Company, the body in charge of the
organisation of the league via their official Twitter handle on Thursday evening, upon request from the Rivers State government.

"Dolphins Football Club now Rivers United Football Club," the LMC tweeted.

“The LMC agreed to the name change this evening upon formal request by the Govt of Rivers.

The LMC chairman, Shehu Dikko, disclosed that "the name adjustment was granted since it was not offensive or prejudicial to national unity and is also agreeable with community identity, supporters' followership and commercial interest of the NPFL."

Meanwhile, the Rivers State government may sell off Sharks's slot in the Nigeria National League following the signing of most of the relegated players into the newly re-branded Rivers United FC od port Harcourt.

The team will kick off their league campaign against the defending champions, Enyimba at the Yakubu Gowon Stadium, Elekahia-Port Harcourt, their home ground.
