Former Nigeria Football Association vice chairman, Gabriel Chukwuma, has described Nigeria coaches as players' agents, saying players don't get invited based on merit.
He said that Nigerian coaches must emulate their European counterparts, who are only interested in developing the game rather them promoting their interests using the national team.
He further explained that the corrupt system within the industry is so choking that the good coaches
with developing intentions for the national teams are not recognised or not duly given responsibilities.
"The greatest problem we have is that we don’t have coaches. What we parade are players’ agents in the name of coaches. We need coaches like we have in other parts of Africa and Europe."
"We have good coaches in Nigeria but because of the system, which is corrupt, we cannot make a headway. They are after who they know, how much you can pay. They don’t operate on merit. We have the best players in Nigeria but if you are not sent by somebody, nobody will recognise you."
The proprietor of Gabros FC added that if he had the chance, he would use a two-year plan to turn Nigerian football around.
"I will first of all go for a coach to have a two-year programme, with a four-year contract to build a super team without sentiments. The two years is to build the team. I will also declare a state of emergency in Nigerian football management. I will unveil a new young team which will stand any team in the world," Chukwuma added. Punch
