World football governing body president, Gianni Infantino, has disclosed that plans are ongoing to increase the number of teams participating in the world cup to forty, adding that African slots will be increased to seven.
The FIFA president, who is currently in Nigeria on a two-day official visit made this known during a media parley in Abuja on Monday evening, saying this might come into effect in 2026.
The world cup currently features 32 countries with Africa representatives occupying just five of the spots.
"I believe for the 2026 World Cup, we should have 40 teams and out of the additional eight teams we should have at least two more African teams,"
"We are discussing this and I hope I will be able to convince everyone as well (with this proposal)."
The former UEFA secretary general also told the president of Nigeria, Mohammadu Buhari, that if properly harnessed, Nigeria could serve as a platform for football development in Africa.
Infantino, was in company of the FIFA secretary general, Ms Fatma Samoura, while over twenty FA presidents in Africa came to Nigeria to receive the world football president.

"I foresee Nigeria as a bedrock for the development of the game in Africa, however infrastructure, stability and security are needed to make this happen," he was quoted as saying by presidential spokesman Femi Adesina.
