Ghana and Mali are the recent countries to have secured spots for themselves at the 2015 U-20 World Cup in New Zealand.
The two countries have also progressed to the semi-finals of the African Under-20 Championship in Senegal while both recorded victories in their group B games on Thursday, leaving Zambia and South Africa out of the championship whether they win their remaining games or not.
Substitute Hamidou Traore, who plays his football in Turkey, proved to be the key man for Mali as he scored twice to cancel out Motjeka Madisha's opening goal for South Africa.
In the second game of the day Zambia took the lead after just two minutes through Dave Daka before Ghana equalised midway through the first half thanks to a goal from Abraham Attobrah.
Sunday's final Group B games see Ghana take on Mali to decide who will top the pool while South Africa face Zambia.
Ghana's Black Satellites left it late for their winner with substitute Samuel Afful scoring with just five minutes left on the clock.
Nigeria have already qualified for the World Cup and the semi-finals from Group A.
It leaves hosts Senegal, Ivory Coast and Congo to battle it out for the last place in the semis the final ticket for New Zealand.
