The Flying Eagles defeated Senegal for the second time at the just concluded African Youth Championship in Dakar Senegal on Sunday to clinch the AYC for the seventh time, a record by the Nigeria's U-20 team.

Bernard Bulbwa fantastic volley in the 22nd minute of the game made all the difference for the Manu Garba led side, and they will go to the world cup as the African Champions, just like the coach promised.

The tournament's highest goal scorer, Mohamed Musa who got 4 goals and described the occasion as promise fulfilled.

Bulbwa also won the Man of the Match award with his 22nd-minute volley to beat a perplexed Ibrahima Sy in goal for the young Teranga Lions.

The Flying Eagles won the Fair Play prize and Musa Mohamed who received the award on the team’s behalf says it was the perfection competition as the team met its pre-tournament target.

Musa Mohamed said: ” We are happy with our performance as champions. From the beginning, we promised ourselves not just the ticket for the FIFA U-20 World Cup, but to qualify as African champions.

"We are happy to achieve both. We played a more compact game based on the tactics of the coach since it was a final match.”

The two sides opened the tournament on the 8th of March and the Nigerian side defeated the host nation, with Taiwo Awoniyi getting a brace and Matthew Ifeanyi sealing the victory for the team.

The qualified for the semis with a 4-1 victory over Congo and a 2-2 draw against Ivory Coast emerging top of the group with 7 points.

They proceeded to beat Ghana 2-0 in the semi finals of the game to reach the final of the championship, and they are fulfilled with their performance; returning to the country with the title. footballlive
