Current world number five, Rafael Nadal has defeated his Spanish compatriot, David Ferrer 6-4 5-7 6-2 to set up a semi-final showdown against world number one, Novak Djokovic at the ongoing Monte Carlo Masters.
Ferrer dragged 28-year old Nadal into a third set but the former number one was too hot to hold back as he (Nadal) sets up his first clay meeting of the season with Djokovic on Saturday.
Judging by their last meeting at the French Open final, Nadal has a upper hand but his stamina could be tested following a gruelling encounter with Ferrer.
But Ferrer displayed his usual fighting qualites as he broke back and then forced a deciding set with some scampering returns.
He could not maintain this gritty resistance as a fired-up Nadal regained command with a break and then cleared the way for a clash against the world No 1. skysports
