World number five, Rafael Nadal has kicked off his Monte-Carlo Rolex Masters campaigns with a 6-2, 6-1 on French young gun, Lucas Pouille.
The former world number one who has not been in his best form until now face either American 15th seed John Isner or Serbian Viktor Troicki in the third round.
Murray will has ruled in Monte Carlo a record eight times and will be hoping this prepare him for the French Open even as he guns for his ninth Monte Carlo title.
The third seed beat the wild card in 69 minutes, converting four of his seven break points and winning 75 per cent of his service points. The No. 108-ranked Pouille had beaten Dominic Thiem on his debut at the Monte-Carlo Country Club to earn the contest with Nadal.
"Today, I played solidly," said Nadal. "Today, I played with no mistakes in a row. I played aggressively when I had to play aggressive. I hit some good passing shots than [in] the past couple of months. [It is] a thing that I haven't been doing very well.
"I will go back to the hotel with [a] fantastic feeling, because I played probably the best match of the year for me... I played with the right mentality [and] the right concentration."
