With one more game to go, a win over Sunderland would have guaranteed Arsenal a spot in the next season's champions league group stage.
The Arsene Wenger-led side were held to a goalless draw at the Emirate Stadium, leaving the Gunners just three points ahead of 4th place Manchester United, who are also trying hard to avoid play off in Europe next season.
The host dominated the game in the 1st 45 minutes of the game but their best chances were that of Mesut Ozil and Olivier Giroud but were off-target.
The visitors almost stun Arsenal in the 2nd half through Steven Fletcher, only to be denied by David Ospina.
Arsenal played a total of 28 shots while 8 were on target but none crossed the line at the end of the game while Sunderland were only allowed to shoot 7 times and just 3 were on target.
For Sunderland, win or lose, they stay in the English topflight while Arsenal are condemned to win their last game to finish third while they avoid the champions league play off for the first time in almost a decade.
