Africa's most decorated table tennis player, Segun Toriola, has equalled the record of seventh Olympics appearances of Swedes Jorgen Persson, Croatia’s Zoran Primorac and Belgium’s Jean-Michel Saive.
The Nigerian table tennis player, who made his Olympics debut at the Barcelona Olympic Games in 1992, will be flying Nigeria's flag in the men's Table Tennis events in Rio Olympic Games in Brazil.
This feat has put the 41-year old athlete into the books of International Olympic Committee (IOC), the sole custodian of table tennis globally, the International Table Tennis Federation, as the most decorated Africa's table tennis player.
Toriola’s feat is listed in the media guide released by ITTF on page 15 stating, "Nigeria’s Segun Toriola will be playing his seventh Olympic Games in Rio, which is the most of any African athlete from any Olympic sport."
"Sweden’s Jorgen Persson, Croatia’s Zoran Primorac and Belgium’s Jean-Michel Saive have played in 7 Olympic Games, most of any table tennis player. Nigeria’s Segun Toriola will join them, as he plays his 7th Olympic in Rio," it stated.
The highlight of Toriola's career was in Beijing 2008 Games when the best African performer became the reference globally, when he reached the round of 16 after beating former world number 1 Jean-Michel Saive as well as David Zhuang. His 1/32 match-up with Jean-Michel Saive.
He crashed out of the 2008 Games in the round of 16 after he was beaten 4-3 by Oh Sang-Eun.
Also from the records, Nigeria is one of the 15 countries to have made it to all table tennis event of the Olympic Games since its inception in 1988.
Others are Sweden,Australia, Austria, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Hong Kong, Hungary, India, Japan, Korea Republic, Poland and the United States.
Nigeria is also one of the six countries to have presented both male and female participants in the table tennis event of the Olympic Games, Nigeria made the list while others are Canada, China, India, Japan, Korea Republic and the United States.
