UEFA To Exempt England, Three Others From Champions League Play Offs

England, Spain, Italy and Germany will as from 2018/19 season be excluded from participating in UEFA champions league play offs.

This means that the top four clubs in the above listed leagues are guaranteed four places each in the group stages of the Europe's Elite championship.

The way it operates currently is that, England, Germany and Spain have three places each while their fourth-placed teams must contest a play-off over two legs for a place in the group phase.

Meanwhile, Italy presently has two guaranteed places, plus one in the play-off round in the champions league, but all that will change in the 2018/19 season.

The body controlling the Europe's top league also has plans to increase the financial distribution to all participating clubs both for the Champions League and Europa League.

UEFA also disclosed that they do not intend to adopt new format for the league, as the UEFA Competition Director, Giorgio Marchetti, added they will continue with the current format of 32 teams drawn in eight groups of four groups for the right to be one of 16 sides to make it through to the knockout competition.

It also said "historical success in the competition" will also be acknowledged to calculate where a league sits in its rankings.

Points will be awarded for previous European titles but weighted towards more recent success in the Champions League and Europa League.
