No fewer than 250 players battle for honours at the maiden edition of the ExxonMobil Tennis Championship which served off at the Ikoyi Club 1938.
The seven-category closed championship was organised for the members of the club, and will end on Saturday.
The chairman of the Ikoyi Club Tennis Section, Ede Osemwengie, revealed that this year's edition is the first to feature a combination of team and individual events.
Executive Director (Commercial) ExxonMobil, Enyi Onokala, said the weeklong event, which will reward players with over N25m, is part of the company’s corporate social responsibility.
The Vice Chairman of Ikoyi Club 1938, Sola Adeosun, said the club was delighted to get the attention of a multinational organisation such as ExxonMobil.
The categories are men’s singles (A and B), men’s doubles, ladies singles, team, veterans’ doubles (60+) and mixed doubles.
The teams will be divided into blue and red groups. The Blue group will have Era, Usan, Yoho and Asabo, while Edo, Asari, Ubit and Ugee will fill up the Red group.
The names, according to Onokala, are derived from ExxonMobil’s areas of operation. Punch
