The central referee, who is from Germany gave seven Atletico players yellow while Barcelona players got three, as both prepare for the second leg at the Vincent De Caldron next Wednesday.
Meanwhile, Pep Guardiola's Bayern Munich edged Benfica 1-0 at the Alianz Arena on the same night as Arturo Vidal's goal distinguished both sides.
