Super Eagles captain, Mikel John Obi, has admitted that the current state of Nigerian football is worrisome, saying "where we are now in terms of football is not where we want to be."
The Chelsea midfielder recently led the Nigeian U23 national team to clinch the 2016 bronze medal in the men's football football event in Brazil, where they defeated Hinduras 3-2 in the 3rd place game.
Mikel, who mised the 2008 edition of the games in Beijing, after winning silver medal at the 2005 FIFA U20 world cup in Netherlands, said the Super Eagles will take a queue from the feat the Samson Siasia led team achieved in Brazil to win a ticket to the 2018 world cup in Russia.
"Nigeria is a massive country and a footballing country as well, so where we are now in terms of football is not where we want to be," Mikel told Newsweek.
"Let’s hope this [the bronze medal] can motivate the national team."
"Now we have the World Cup qualifiers coming up, we have to be ready for that."
The 2013 African Cup of Nation winner also admits that Nigeria are in a very tight group, but with adequate preparation and the right environment, they will be representing Nigeria in Russia.
"We have to make sure we prepare well and qualify for the World Cup."
Nigeria, under the newly German manager, Gernot Rohr, will be facing Tanzania in their inconsequential AFCON qualifiers next month while the technical adviser assess the team ahead of Nigeria's crunch games against Algeria, Cameroon and Zambia in Group B.
