Al Ahly of Egypt forward, Junior Ajayi, has said that he was excited to be a part of the Nigeria U23 team that won bronze for the country at the just concluded Olympic Games in Rio, Brazil.
The 20-year old striker Tunisian side, CS Sfaxien from Nigeria Professional Football league side, Shooting Stars of Ibadan in 2015 and appeared for them 28 times scoring 10 goals in the process.
Ajayi said he was disappointed that Injury did not allow him feature for the Samson Siasia’s men in their Brazil, but insisted that the team’s goal of winning a medal is far better than his individual goal of playing at all cost.
“I’m really happy for being part of the team, yes, it was a bad timing but injury is part of the game, it was a bad timing to have an injury at the Olympics but, actually whether I play or not, bronze medal is very important, so that’s it.”
Ajayi also gave kudos to their fans, who stood by them regardless of the situation they were face with, adding that he was happy the Dream Team VI made Nigerians proud.
“I must say a big thank you for all their prayers, efforts and supports to the team; I’m glad we made them proud and be good ambassadors of Nigeria.”
On John Mikel Obi, he said that the Chelsea player became the backbone of the team from their Atlanta camp all through to Brazil, adding that Mikel took the fatherly role in camp.
“Mikel is like a father, leader and a mentor, he’s like the backbone of the team, so we really appreciate him and his encouragement helped us.”
