Few months after signing a contract extension with the Iranian national team until 2018, coach Carlos Queiroz has quit his position as Iran head coach.
The former Real Madrid boss who assume his position with the Asian side in April of 2011 helped the nation qualify for the 2014 FIFA world cup held in Brazil but were unable to progress from the group stage.
He also helped Iran get to the quarter-finals of the Asian Cup in Australia earlier this year, but were defeated on penalties by Iraq.
Queiroz expressed sadness at his departure but explained it was expedient for him to move as it will help him as well as the team he is leaving behind.
However, following a 3-1 friendly defeat to Sweden on Tuesday, the Portuguese has opted to bring an end his tenure.
"After four years of work with the national team, I am proud of the team and the individual players," Queiroz said.
"Now I am sad to leave the team, but that's life and I'm happy to be moving forward." goal
