Nigeria's D'Tigers hopes of reaching the quarter finals of the men's basketball event at the ongoing Olympic Games in Rio, Brazil, came to sudden end on Monday evening after the Nigerian campaigners failed to go past Brazil in their final group game.
The 2015 FIBA Afrobasket champions, who defeated Croatia in their third group game last weekend
needed a win to scale through to the next stage, but the host country crushed that ambition- defeated the Nigerian side 86-69.
The coach Williams Voigt team got into business early, taking a one point advantage 16-15, into the second quarter of the game, but the Brazilians shook off the first quarter defeat to win the second quarter 42-31- a turnover of 12 points in favour of the host.
Nigeria managed to reduce the deficit to seven points at the end of the third quarter, which ended 59-52 in favour of Brazil and went ahead to complete the the run in the fourth quarter with an additional 27 points, wrapping it all up and would be hoping that the Argentina will beat Spain for them to earn a sport in the last eight stage.
Nigeria won just one out of their four group games in Brazil, losing to Argentina, Spain and Lithuania, while Croatia was their only victory in group B.
Meanwhile, Alade Aminu, who currently ply his trade in the Isreali Super League, has given kudos to all those who supported the team all the way.
He also expressed disappointment that they failed to reach their target of progressing beyond the group stage, but insisted that he was proud to represent Nigeria at the games in Brazil, saying he will do it again in the coming Olympics in Tokyo.
"Want to say thank you to all & Nigeria! For following and the unbelievable support. Unfortunately didn't get to accomplish we set out."
"But a blessing to be here in Rio 2016, Olympics. And def looking forward to making another Olympics. God willing. Love" Aminu tweeted after the game on Monday
