Paul Aigbogun Reacts To Enyimba’s CAF Champions League Exit In Egypt

Paul Aigbogun has expressed disappointment following Enyimba’s exit from this year’s CAF champions league at the group stage following their 1-0 defeat on Monday night in Egypt.

Basem Morsy’s 63rd minute goal through the spot kick sent the two-time champions home after failing to win the any of their three group B games.

Aigbogun, who took charge of the team at the beginning of the season said that Nigeria Professional
Football League champions defending champions failed in converting their chances in front of goal, and that was why they failed to progress beyond the group stage.

“Honestly we are not happy, you know when you get this far and you can’t get through to the semi finals is quite painful but in football, that’s the way it goes.”

“I don’t think necessarily so, even though our group was quite tough, and I think bringing it down to three teams became an issue, I think that when the draws were made, this is a group anybody would want to avoid, but I don’t think so ‘cos if you look at the games, we just unfortunately couldn’t take most of our chances which has been a problem most of the season.”

The former Warri Wolves gaffer insists that the NPFL title chase isn’t over yet as they will return home to focus on how they can retain the title they won last season.

Enyimba are seventh on the NPFL log, six points shy of the league leaders at the moment with one game at hand and their next game is against Wikki Tourists, who are second on the log with one point behind Rangers.

“Yes, you know I keep on telling people that this league is still on, I know it, it looks like we are out of the league title race but we haven’t given up because the league in Nigeria has never been won at this stage from when I’ve been here, so we’ll go back and prepare for that, but it’s just so unfortunate that we didn’t make it this time.”

“I think the fundamentals in the game is missing, I think administratively, we need to look into all of that, our development programs, continuity in our teams, you look at most of the team we played on the continent, you’ll discover they’ve been together for eight-nine years, but we keep breaking our teams most of the time and rebuilding them, and I think it’s down to the fact that we don’t have a good youth development policy.”

“If we have a good youth development policy, there’ll be continuity and good foundation, so I think we really need to look at that area.”

“Of course, you learn by every success, you learn by every failure, I’ve learnt a lot personally and I think the club will look back and also learn one or two things too.” Aigbogun told Tobi Adepoju in Cairo
