Serena Williams Commends Elina Svitolina After Crashing Out Of Rio Olympic Games

America's Serena Williams has admitted that Ukrainian Elina Svitolina deserved to go through to the next stage of the Olympic Games in Brazil, saying she was obviously the better player in the game.

The world number 20 stunned the world number, beating the 34-year old 6-4 6-3 in the third round of the women's singles event.

Serena couldn't help but make five double faults in the seventh game of the second set, ending her quest to defend the title she won four years back in London.

"It didn't work out the way I wanted it to but at least I was able to make it to Rio - that was one of my goals," Williams said.

"The better player today won but I know next time is going to be a really good match and I look forward to it."

The American player alogside her elder sister were bundled out on Sunday by Czech Republic pair Lucie Safarova and Barbora Strycova.

This defeat means that both world number one in both the men and women's category have been thrown out of the Games in Brazil, both in the singles and doubles category.
