Olympic Qualifiers: Awoniyi Confident Nigeria Will Beat Congo

Flying Eagles striker, Taiwo Awoniyi has assured Nigerians that the nation's national U-23 team will defeat their Congolese counterpart in Port Harcourt.

The 18-year old forward alongside teammates Musa Yahaya and Godwin Saviour were included in coach Samson Siasia's 25-man provisional list ahead of their July 19 Olympic qualifier against Congo.

Taiwo admitted that the Dream Team VI are oblivion to Congo's style of play, but added that it won't stop them from beating them handsomely and making the second leg a mere formality.

Awoniyi, who is among the few called drafted from the Under-20 team, said that the coaches have told them that beating Congo is non-negotiable, adding that they must win with a good goal margin.

“We dont know how the Congolese play but we are determined to play our normal game and get a good result in Port Harcourt and go and finish the business in Congo. For them to get to this stage, they must be a good side that we must take seriously,” Awoniyi told completesportsnigeria.com.

“For me, I dont predict matches but I will as usual put in my best and if the goal-scoring opportunity comes, I will take it, but my concern is for the team to win well. It does not matter who scores so long as we get a very good result.”

On his future, Awoniyi said that he would finally move to Europe next month but would not divulge the exact country or club he would be plying his trade next season.

He stressed that his refusal to play in the domestic league was never intended to slight the Nigerian league “but just that things did not work out the way I planned. The Nigerian league standard is high and the clubs are well managed too.”  completesports
