South Africa’s Niekerk Breaks Michael Johnson 19-year Old 400M Record

South Africa's Wayde van Niekerk became the new 400m world record holder after smashing united States Michael Johnson's 17-year old at the ongoing track and field events in the Olympic Games in Rio, Brazil.

Niekerk, who ran on lane eight alongside two former Olympic champions – Kirani James and
LaShawn Merritt  in the event finished with a stunning time of 43.03, and set a new record in the world of athletics.

The 24-year-old broke the records Johnson set in Seville in 1999 by 0.15 quicker, as Grenada's Kirani James, the London 2012 champion, finished 0.73 behind to take the silver medal, with American LaShawn Merritt in bronze.

James edged ahead of Merritt to take silver in 43.76, while Merritt crossed the line in 43.85 to take bronze. Machel Cedenio of Trinidad and Tobago was fourth in a national record of 44.01.

In a race of unprecedented depth, the top seven men all finished within 44.50 and all finalists ran faster than 44.70.
